Spring 2009 – Comments from Mike Splane’s Business 91L Students

What experiences, events, or situations will you remember most?

Thinking I was really good @ Word already and learning that I knew nothing.

Liked when he used real life experiences to refer to Excel work activities.

Everyday joke, encouraged class interaction w/small rewards.

Teaches us useful skills that we are able to use now in our schooling & on the job tasks.

The joke at the beginning of class and also the introductions we gave the first day.

The goofy jokes.

The instructor’s bad jokes at the beginning of class. They made me laugh.

The whole class was really informative and helpful so I’ll probably remember everything. Oh, and I’ll remember the jokes. J

Always willing to help when I got lost or confused during a lecture.

Prof Splane was very consistent in giving individual care to every student who needed it.

Boolean formulas.

Excel information helped a lot and allowed me to use concepts in other classes.

What were the most significant qualities or methods of the instructor that contributed to your learning?

Clear on instructions.

Prof Splane was very organized in his instructions and always prepared to teach.

His openness to questions, the candy given also encouraged more question asking.

Very clear, friendly instructions created an easy to learn environment.

Clear step by step instruction in class and in the book.

Willing to help students understand.

He’s a nice person.

The instructor always had a friendly/positive attitude.

Hands on teaching,

Funny, tries to make class interesting.

Doesn’t make anyone feel dumb, encourages everyone to participate.

Always answered questions.

Knowing that if I needed help I could ask.

In class lectures were great and helpful.

Explained each function and how it was used in the real world.

I would say trying to include assignments that we may use one day.

Telling jokes, helping, and genuinely caring.

Liked the way you did things a couple times if needed.

Patience, and he showed those little keyboard tricks. Much appreciated.

Step by step process of exercises helped me so much.

HW, lots of examples, good explanations. Info can be applied to everyday use.

Laid back and cool.

New version of Office- New tricks. Functions in Excel – cool graphs/different graphs. Word – help to spiffy up my assignments.

What should the instructor know in order to teach the class more effectively?

Better jokes.

Pass out more candy.

Confused when silent.

More examples in class.

Go a  little bit slower in the lessons. Sometimes it’s hard to keep up.

I think it will be helpful if he made the screen larger when he uses the projector.

He had pretty good explanation of VLOOKUP and IF functions but those were the hardest to remember.

More help with the VLOOKUP and IF functions.

Have everyone fill the seats in front instead of hiding in the back. We waste time by them not hearing/seeing.

None, I liked the class.

You’re doing a great job. Keep up the good work!

Nothing I can think of, you did great!

Keep on doing what you’re doing! GREAT class, I enjoyed it and learned so much J

What changes would improve the overall value of the course?

More jokes

Class involvement

More interaction/games

None from me. I enjoyed the class – not too difficult, informative.

I wouldn’t change anything to improve the value. I think it is fine now.

Easier book.

Didn’t like the book.

More clear instruction in the book.

Maybe more time on Word and PowerPoint

I actually wished there were more class. Teaching more stuff.

More Excel stuff.

I’d love to have the course for the whole semester to learn more advanced Excel.

I think it is good overall. Perhaps some statistics, accounting, finance basics.

Would you recommend the course to other students?

Yes. These are skills every student should know.

Of course, it is extremely useful to everyone, not just business students.

Yes! I already did J

Yes, it is helpful and you learn a lot.

Yes, with this teacher.

Yes I would recommend the course. I did learn a lot.

Yes, especially if they are unfamiliar with any of these programs and or Microsoft Office 2007.

Yes, Definitely. Very helpful.

Of course. (Underlined three times)

Very much so, this class was fun, a great learning tool, and also well taught compared to some of the other teachers.
