Fall 2007 – Comments from Mike Splane’s Business 91L students

What experiences, events, or situations will you remember most?

Most of it!

Help is available. Gave us enough time to do the homework.

Excel tutorial was the most helpful.

I’ll always remember the skills I learn in class because I put a lot of time on it.

He tells a joke to begin each class section.

In the beginning of the semester the teacher told us a joke to start class.

The course was very informative. However I will remember the jokes he told.

The jokes he told.

Jokes, slides.

The jokes!

I will remember the poorly attempted jokes.

Mike Splane’s jokes. Great guy.

Making graphs on Excel colorful and exciting by adding Word Art and graphics.

How to do PowerPoint. It was fun!

The fun lectures.

Control ~, very cool.

How to do great in Excel. At first I didn’t know how to use it but now I do.

I will remember the cool … shortcuts and tips.

I liked Excel. Profound teaching; great instructor.

I think the Microsoft Excel techniques I learned are going to help me a lot in the long run, be it in school or in my professional field. Same with PowerPoint.

Mike Splane takes his time to explain the materials. He offers candy to students who ask questions in class. He is very patient.

The professor was very knowledgeable and made class entertaining.

All few weeks of instructions were interesting and very helpful for me since I didn’t have a lot of knowledge about Excel, Powerpoint. Teacher is straight to the point, very clear, understanding.

Overall good teacher.

The professor went well out of his way to help me out with a conflict between work vs final.

Good atmosphere.

What were the most significant qualities or methods of the instructor that contributed to your learning?

Professor Splane conducts his class in a manner which allows the student to feel comfortable to ask questions & seek additional assistance.

He was very reachable – especially through email.

He explains the material very clearly. Very helpful and approachable. Responds to email very quickly: cares about students. He answers questions clearly.

Always took questions and went over everything and he put grades online.

He was thorough.

He is very thorough and willing to go over areas of difficulty more than once.

Taking time with lesson.

Easy going.

Easy going, always stopped/paused to explain. I love the rule “There is no bad ?s.”

The ease it was taught with. He went through everything over again if someone didn’t understand.

The book that he wrote.

Gave us handouts, tips, info in book and on his website which helped us in case we got stuck or didn’t remember how to do something.

Very open to students. Nice

He included students in lecture.

Provided examples related to concepts.

He knew a lot about everything.

Expert testimony and great examples.

He used great examples in teaching the lessons. His visual aid helped.

His knowledge of the course and all the short cuts available in MS Office. Other methods include step by step instructions. The instructor’s format is very educational.

Using the overhead projector.

Showing on screen step by step process as we do all assignments.

The fact that he went through each example step by step is very helpful.

I liked how he went through everything step by step showing everyone how to do each process on the big screen.

Performing examples on the front computer that were easy to follow along.

Breaks down steps & slows down so everyone could follow the procedure.

The in-class activities helped as I could physically do what I was learning & this helped me remember better.

Hands on learning.

He was always well-organized & prepared for this class, which left no room for confusion. Any queries were efficiently tended to.

Visually showing us what we had to do & showing us close examples to what our assignments were.

He taught us every technique on each assignment before we did homework.

He had creative homework and class assignments that facilitated learning.

He had assignments that would actually relate to us.

Related to us.

Computer tools that are not only important in the business world, but are significant for my schoolwork as well.

He was really helpful, nice, cool, funny.

Fun and happy. Made class interesting.

Friendly, passionate.

He is passionate about the subject. His teaching style makes it easy and fun to learn.

You get to redo them [homework assignments] for a perfect grade

Answered questions sufficiently. Wanted the student to learn.

I don’t think I ever acquired sufficient amount of knowledge as I did in this class in just five weeks.

I learn many tips in Excel which is great!

He made learning process easy & fun. He is patient and calm while lecturing. He focuses on detail so that we don’t miss out on anything. He is efficient in teaching.

What should the instructor know in order to teach the class more effectively?

Teach a little more at students speed.

If the pace he is going is too fast or not.

Just to go in a bit slower pace for student unfamiliar with the subject.

Ask students often if we are clear on the assignments.

Students background.

That students need your mouse work on their computer.

Current update in technology.

Need better jokes to keep them awake J

Speak louder sometimes.

Having a class that explores more into the features of PowerPoint – especially with movies and sounds as sometimes there could be glitches in this area that students would like to improve upon.

Nothing, maybe reduce the workload a bit.

More activities.

Nothing class was perfect. Maybe explain IF functions a little more.

The class is very effective as is.

He knows what he is doing. Excellent teacher.

He’s a great prof.

He did a good job.

Seemed to do a pretty good job as is.

He’s doing a good job.

He is doing a great job.

I think he is doing a great job. Keep it up!!

N/A is doing it already too good.

I think he knows enough.

He’s got it covered.

I am not sure he needs to be more effective than he already is.

Good as is.

The course was taught effectively. No need for improvement.

Nothing, he’s great!

What changes would improve the overall value of the course?

Change it to a 6 week course.

Maybe longer.

Make the class funner or interesting.

Letting students drop if needed.

None, if it was a letter grade.

Explain Excel better, slower.

Too easy.

Better way to see the board, sometimes I have my glasses at home.

As far as I’m concerned, with the amount of time we had we learned as much as we could.

I don’t think anything should be changed relating to this class.

Nothing, everything is perfect.

Nothing, everything is good. I learned a lot.

Nothing at all, he is good at what he does.

N/A It’s already pretty good.

The class was great.

N/A Great class.

It was a great course. Nothing needs to be changed.

None. The course is well designed.

The course is good the way it is; no change is needed for improvement.

In my opinion the course is highly interactive and fun. Sometimes though the professor tends to start zooming through the material & then it becomes a little hard to catch up, as the doubts need to be clarified and this also reduces the pace.

The course is great. Material is relevant and comprehensible. The overall value can be improved by providing faster computers to students.
